SUMMARY:Shakey Graves with Hovvdy at Concerts at Point of the Bluff
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\nAcross his career\, Shakey Graves—a.k.a. the performance moniker of Austin\, Texas-born Alejandro Rose-Garcia—has intentionally created thrilling musical adventures tailored to each fan: burning CDs and putting them in personalized decorated bags; building intricate scavenger hunts that send fans in search of unique tapes; and Bandcamp-exclusive releases. “The fans and musicians that really resonate with me—and the inexplicable ways that I find things that I like—are usually entirely through randomness and chaos and accident\,” Rose- Garcia says. “I’ve always been on this quest to make people feel like my own music is a choose your own adventure.” \nIn 2024 Rose-Garcia celebrated the ten year anniversary of his And The War Came album with a special 10 Year Anniversary Edition release featuring never before heard demos and b-sides from the recording process and inviting fans to enter the long since abandoned Music House. His story continues to unfold\, but Shakey Graves Is Still A Gentleman From Texas.

SUMMARY:Grace Potter with support: Eli Flynn + The Everymen at Concerts at Point of the Bluff
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\nWay back in 2008—before the Grammy nominations\, the steady stream of sold-out tours and critically acclaimed records\, the co-signs from rock royalty like the Rolling Stones\, Robert Plant\, Bonnie Raitt\, Iggy Pop\, and many more—Grace Potter holed up in an L.A. studio with the legendary T Bone Burnett and cut an album unlike any other in her wildly expansive body of work. Made with a crew of musical luminaries\, the Burnett-produced LP captured Potter at a moment of profound metamorphosis\, then wound up shelved. After joining forces with her former label Hollywood Records to unearth those recordings from deep in the vaults\, Potter at long last presents the official release of Medicine: a powerhouse album that’s equal parts archival gem and thrilling new addition to her extraordinary catalog. \n“I remember being in the studio with T Bone and feeling like this was everything I’d been waiting for\, and I couldn’t go wrong—it never occurred to me that the album might not get released\,” says Potter. “But even though I felt a great urgency to put the record out back then\, I’m at peace with the fact that it’s taken this long. I’m at a point where I have a much stronger understanding of what I have to offer the world\, and this offering feels like it’s right on time.” \nArriving on the heels of her fifth solo album Mother Road—a 2023 LP that marked her most fiercely visionary work to date—Medicine came to life soon after the release of This Is Somewhere\, the 2007 sophomore effort from her former band Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. After stumbling upon a video of Potter delivering an a cappella rendition of the title track from the band’s 2005 debut Nothing but the Water\, Burnett didn’t hesitate when approached about working with Potter. They arranged a meeting at the Hotel Bel-Air—an occasion so consequential she recalls every moment in ultra-vivid detail. (“I remember wearing a Missoni dress I’d bought vintage\, which was unraveling at the seams\,” says Potter. “I arrived way too early\,  so I listened to Linda Ronstadt’s ‘Blue Bayou’ on repeat in the car. Then\, I finally sat down with T-Bone and Bob Cavallo\, head of Hollywood Records at the time. I ordered corned-beef hash and sat dead-still trying to keep my dress from falling apart as we talked about the project and everything we could create together.”) Fresh off his widely celebrated turn as producer on Robert Plant and Alison Krauss’ Raising Sand—a 2007 album whose five Grammy wins added to a legacy that also included producing O Brother\, Where Art Thou?—Burnett approached the project with a definitive plan for what would become Medicine. “T Bone’s idea was that my voice and the rhythm would carry the record\,” she says. “He told me my voice was a force of nature\, that it needed to be compelled forward by something with a superhuman momentum—which was not at all what I’d expected\, and so much more enticing and exciting as a new access point for my musicality.” \nRecorded at The Village Studios\, Medicine strays far from the high-spirited roots-rock of Potter’s earliest work\, bringing a shadowy intensity to her soul-baring songs of lust and longing and self-salvation. To carve out the sonic landscape envisioned for the album\, Burnett enlisted his longtime collaborators Jim Keltner\, bassist Dennis Crouch\, guitarist Marc Ribot\, and keyboardist Keefus Ciancia. “It was like being in a masterclass every day\,” says Potter. “I was so game for whatever T Bone wanted to try\, whether it was making space for my voice to really ring out or letting the music swallow me whole so I could drown a little bit and then come back to the surface.” For Potter\, that process unlocked aspects of her vocal artistry previously unknown to her. “At the time I was in a rock band where screaming over the loudest guitar onstage was my main job\,” she says. “But this album often required real restraint and nuance\, and it taught me so much about how to play with those moments of tension and release.” \nOpening with “Before The Sky Falls\,” Medicine immediately reveals the strangely timeless quality of its songwriting and sound. With its strutting grooves\, rumbling drums\, and frenetic guitar tones\, the quietly seductive track channels the supreme pleasure of surrendering to love in times of chaos. One of the first songs recorded for Medicine\, “Before The Sky Falls\,” also set the tone for near-telepathic improvisation that fueled much of the album. “At the start of that session T Bone told us\, ‘I want Keefus to begin the journey with a single color\, and I want you all to let him wander for a while—it’ll be like a Quaker ceremony where you don’t speak until you feel called\,’” she says. “There was no real discussion about the arrangement; he just wanted us to enter into a state of working together by letting each musician slowly build around what the others were bringing in.” \nOver the course of its 12 songs\, Medicine achieves a hypnotic power thanks to the charmed interplay between Potter’s shapeshifting voice and the sonic exploration of her collaborators. On “Low Road\,” for instance\, her vocals slip into a moody smolder as she recounts a surreal night in Austin when she roamed the city alone and encountered a man dressed as a priest. “I was in a dreamlike state and talked with him for a long time about his regrets and love affairs gone wrong\, and it made me realize how we as humans are so desperate to connect with people who’ve experienced the same pain we have.” Meanwhile\, on “If I Was from Paris\,” Potter shares the first song ever written on her iconic Gibson Flying V: a gloriously brash come-on propelled by primal drumbeats\, slinky guitar riffs\, and coquettish harmonies. “T Bone understood exactly where I was coming from and told me\, ‘Let’s make this song as subversive as it can possibly be.’” \nWith its tracklist encompassing everything from the sublimely languid psychedelia of “Colors” to the avant-blues majesty of “To Shore” to the paradigm-shifting “Oasis\,” Medicine takes its title from an epic femme-fatale tale that Potter considers particularly formative in shaping her songwriting voice. “It was the first song I wrote when I got the official call that I was green-lit to make the record with T-Bone. I didn’t even wait to get out of the bathtub. I just wrote and wrote until I was a prune…and there she was.”  Spiked with a bit of feverish guitar work from Burnett\, the groove-heavy and horn-soaked “Medicine” brilliantly shifts between desperation and ferocity as Potter delves into the darkest realms of her subconscious. “T Bone had given me some ideas about what to sing about for this record\, and one of his questions was\, ‘What shows up in your dreams?’” she says. “That led me to write about this haunting character who’s threatening me\, but who also is me. It felt like an introduction to a character I’ve come to know very well\, and who’s wandered into many of my songs since then.” One of several tracks later revisited for the Nocturnals’ next album—and featured here in their original\, never-before-heard form—“Medicine” has since become a staple in Potter’s notoriously transcendent live show. “Over the years I’ve brought in more and more elements of dream states and magic into my live set\, and so much of that was influenced by my work with T Bone\,” she points out. \nDespite the undeniable success of Potter and Burnett’s collaboration\, Hollywood Records decided to put Medicine on the backburner in favor of developing the demos she’d recently created with multi-Grammy-winning producer Mark Batson (Alicia Keys\, Dr. Dre\, Dave Matthews Band)—a prolific musical partnership that eventually led to Grace Potter and the Nocturnals’ 2010 self-titled album. “Batson and I clicked instantly. We had a great shorthand and we’d already been writing together throughout the winter and spring of 2008. The demos I made with him were fast and sexy\, and had a lot of swagger—the label felt going in that direction was the best way to keep up the momentum my band had been building\,” says Potter. “I remember playing in Central Park and my former manager telling me\, ‘The label doesn’t want to put out Medicine. But good news: you’re on a plane to L.A. tonight\, and we’re going straight to the studio to make the record with Batson.’ That album ended up being a big success\, and I wouldn’t change a thing about it—but going back into the studio to record a lot of the same songs all over again felt like something out of Groundhog Day.” \nSince the making of Medicine\, Potter has forged a formidable career that’s included sharing the stage with the likes of Robert Plant\, Allman Brothers Band\, the Rolling Stones\, and Mavis Staples\, in addition to earning three Grammy nominations (including Best Rock Album for her critically lauded 2019 album Daylight and another for a 2011 collaboration with country superstar Kenny Chesney). “Medicine brought me to a new understanding of the diversity of musicality I have within me—it showed me I had so much to share beyond the ’70s-throwback\, rock-and-roll thing I had been known for up to that point\,” says Potter. “Maybe it was just so far behind its time…or so ahead of its time…that I needed to step away from it for a while\, keep exploring and keep moving away from anything derivative. This is an album that truly belongs in its own space\, and I’m so happy to finally give it the platform I know it deserves.” \nSupported by Eli Flynn + The Everymen

SUMMARY:The Decemberists at Concerts at Point of the Bluff
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\nFor over 20 years The Decemberists have been one of the most original\, daring\, and thrilling American rock bands. Founded in the year 2000 when singer\, songwriter\, and guitarist Colin Meloy moved from Montana to Portland\, Oregon and met bassist Nate Query\, keyboardist Jenny Conlee\, and guitarist Chris Funk\, The Decemberists’ distinctive brand of hyperliterate folk-rock set them apart from the start with the release of their debut EP 5 Songs in 2001. After making their full-length debut with Castaways and Cutouts in 2002\, the band signed with Kill Rock Stars for the release of the acclaimed albums Her Majesty the Decemberists (2003) and Picaresque (2005)\, which was produced by Chris Walla. The 2004 EP The Tain – an 18-minute single-track epic – made the band’s grand creative ambitions clear.\n\nAround this time the band’s permanent line-up fell into place with the arrival of drummer John Moen\, and they made the unexpected leap to Capitol Records for their first major label album in 2006. Fans’ concerns of whether the band would alter their trademark sound quickly vanished when they delivered their most ambitious and audacious record to date in The Crane Wife\, a song cycle produced by Walla and Tucker Martine (who would become a longtime creative partner) that added elements of ‘70s prog\, hard rock and even quasi-disco to their palette. The album was met by wide acclaim from The New York Times\, Rolling Stone\, SPIN\, Stereogum\, and was named Best New Music by Pitchfork.\nThree years later\, The Hazards of Love – a full-length concept album based on Meloy’s idea for a stage musical – was a Top 20 hit. In 2011\, they topped themselves yet again with their first #1 album\, The King Is Dead\, which featured the GRAMMY-nominated song “Down By The Water.” After their 2015 album What A Terrible World\, What A Beautiful World\, which included the #1 AAA radio hit “Make You Better\,” The Decemberists changed up their sound and explored new approaches to making music on their eighth studio album I’ll Be Your Girl (2018) with producer John Congleton.\n\nNow the enduring indie band returned in 2024 with their first new music in six years\, As It Ever Was\, So It Will Be Again. In many ways\, this album feels like an aptly titled renewal for The Decemberists\, realized by returning to familiar routes of creation with the ever- updating perspective of now. “More than any other album\,” writes Stereogum\, “this album feels like a career summary of everything The Decemberists are and have been\, juxtaposing stripped-down folk and buoyant pop songs against lengthy monoliths.” They are produced by Tucker Martine and rendered by a band with a true sense of purpose and meaning. The Decemberists have been here before\, but they’ve rarely if ever felt so directed and focused\, so able to condense some bit of truth into a few compulsive verses. As It Ever Was\, So It Will Be Again is the first full-length release on YABB Records\, the band’s own label\, after a run of nearly two decades with Capitol. As they were once\, here are the Decemberists again\, now an independent band empowered by singing stories that sound instantly familiar and convey some bit of hard-won wisdom.

SUMMARY:The Bacon Brothers with support: The Pernikoff Brothers at Concerts at Point of the Bluff
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\nThe Bacon Brothers have spent the better part of three decades exploring their own mix of folk\, rock\, soul\, and country music. They call that diverse sound “forosoco\,” and it’s taken them around the world\, from headlining gigs in Japan to American performances at iconic venues like Carnegie Hall\, the Grand Ole Opry and Gruene Hall.\n\nThe exploration continues with the band’s twelfth release\, Ballad Of The Brothers. It’s a record that highlights not only the similarities between Kevin Bacon (known worldwide as an A-list Hollywood actor) and Michael Bacon (celebrated as an Emmy-winning composer)\, but the differences\, too. The two siblings may be bound together by blood and a mutual love of American roots music\, but they’ve grown into sharp songwriters and cinematic storytellers with their own distinct approaches. Ballad Of The Brothers makes room for both of those approaches\, offering a mix of edgy alt-rock (“Take Off This Tattoo”)\, Motown-inspired soul (“Put Your Hand Up”)\, fingerpicked folk (“Let That Be Enough”)\, and everything in between. The album also marks the continuation of a musical partnership that began long ago in Philadelphia\, where the Bacons were raised on a soundtrack of 1970s singer/songwriters\, Philly soul bands\, and classic rock acts. Multiple decades and countless shows later\, they’re creating their own soundtrack\, saluting their old-school influences while making music that’s undeniably modern.\n\nSupported by The Pernikoff Brothers

SUMMARY:Guster & The Mountain Goats at Concerts at Point of the Bluff
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\n\nABOUT GUSTER \nNot long before the making of their new album Ooh La La\, Guster celebrated three decades together as a band—a journey that’s included landing a series of hits on the Billboard charts\, working with luminaries like Steve Lillywhite and Richard Swift\, launching their own music festival\, and amassing an ardent fanbase partly on the strength of their relentless touring and deeply communal live show. But despite reaching a milestone few musical acts ever come close to attaining\, Guster’s ninth studio LP reveals a band fully in touch with the voracious creative energy that first inspired their formation. A major leap forward for lead vocalist Ryan Miller\, guitarist Adam Gardner\, drummer Brian Rosenworcel\, and multi-instrumentalist Luke Reynolds\, Ooh La La ultimately matches that wide-eyed spirit with a newly heightened sense of confidence\, conviction\, and commitment to the raw sincerity that’s made them so beloved. \n“In all the time we’ve been together we’ve never really felt our age as a band—we’re still so hungry\, still excited to create\,” says Gardner. “A lot of people have told us they’re amazed at how democratic our process is\, but I think that’s a big part of why we’re still able to open up this space where the ideas just flow. It also helps that we’ve built a relationship with our fans where there’s a real sense of trust and a desire for us to keep growing and keep pushing ourselves. It’s such a gift that allows us to be truly free\, and to make whatever music we want to make.” \nThe follow-up to 2019’s Look Alive\, Ooh La La marks a bold departure from its predecessor—a sonically adventurous and electronic-leaning effort made with producer Leo Abrahams (Brian Eno\, Regina Spektor). This time around\, the band worked mainly with producer Josh Kaufman (The National\, The Hold Steady\, Bonny Light Horseman)\, holing up at Isokon Studio in Woodstock and carving out a lush and expansive sound rich in acoustic guitars and graceful piano work. With additional production from Ron Aniello (Bruce Springsteen) and Rich Costey (Death Cab for Cutie\, Of Monsters and Men)\, Ooh La La endlessly radiates an undeniable warmth\, even as its songs delve into the more daunting aspects of living in modern times. “One of Josh’s great strengths is finding the heart of the song\, which felt right for the world we live in\,” says Rosenworcel. “When I listen back to the album now it feels like there’s depth everywhere—there’s not a moment where we strike a chord that isn’t meaningful to us. Nobody was going to accept a song that didn’t hit at a certain level\, and it feels good to still have that passion more than 30 years into our career.” \nPrimarily mixed by Peter Katis (The National\, Kurt Vile)\, Ooh La La takes its title from a lyric in lead single “Keep Going”—a lovely encapsulation of the album’s emotional undercurrent\, telegraphing an irrepressible joy in the face of turmoil and unrest. “Most of these songs were written against the backdrop of what felt like an apocalypse\,” says Miller. “It was such a transformative time\, and we were dealing with a lot of existential questions about what it means to be a father\, a husband\, a creative person in the midst of all the chaos.” The only track composed with an outside co-writer\, “Keep Going” was sparked from a session between Miller and songwriter Rob Kleiner\, later emerging as a shimmering piece of alt-pop lit up in luminous harmonies and gauzy guitar tones. “One thing we’ve continually done as a band is acknowledge what’s going on in our world but still bring some positivity to the music\,” says Gardner. “We’re always going to be real about what’s happening\, but we still want to leave people with a feeling of hope.” \nLooking back on the making of Ooh La La\, the members of Guster point to a heady and hypnotic number called “All Day” as a particularly charmed moment. “As soon as that song arrived in the room\, it felt like it knew exactly what it needed to be\,” Reynolds says of “All Day” (one of two songs recorded with Aniello and Costey at Guilford Sound in Vermont). “My feeling is that it’s our job as a band to stay engaged and do the work\, to follow what feels exciting and recognize that we’re never totally in control of the results. So when a song shows up and already feels fully formed\, it’s an incredible thing to watch unfold.” Born during a jam session at Gardner’s parents’ house early on in the writing process\, “All Day” also wholly fulfills the band’s intention of infusing a certain unabashed earnestness into the lyrical element of Ooh La La. “I remember stumbling onto those lyrics and feeling so connected to them and thinking to myself\, ‘This might be one that we’ll be still playing 15 years from now\,’” Miller recalls. “There’s nothing sneaky or clever about it; it’s completely direct and the emotion of it just shines through.” \nFor Guster\, the open-hearted receptivity that catalyzed the creation of songs like “All Day” has served as a touchstone throughout the band’s history. But while their audience has grown exponentially since Guster got their start playing in dorm rooms at Tufts University in 1991\, they’ve sustained an extraordinarily strong connection with their fanbase over the years. To that end\, one of Guster’s most cherished endeavors is the On The Ocean Festival—an annual event that began in 2017 in Gardner’s adopted hometown of Portland\, Maine\, with a reunion-like atmosphere and an eclectic mix of performers including Bahamas\, Lucius\, Madison Cunningham\, and Shakey Graves. “We feel lucky that we’ve created a dynamic where there’s no real separation between us and our fans—we’re all part of a community\, and it’s theirs just as much as it’s ours\,” says Gardner. “One of the main reasons we’re still a band is the fans who’ve come to see us for years\, the people who show us the tattoos they’ve gotten with our lyrics\,” Miller adds. “It inspires us to stay creative and stay fearless\, instead of just making the same record over and over. Everything we do is in service of that connection\, and at this point I’d say we’re definitely lifers.” \n\n\nABOUT THE MOUNTAIN GOATS \nthe Mountain Goats | Jenny from Thebes | MRG841\nJenny from Thebes began its life as many albums by the Mountain Goats do\, with John Darnielle playing the piano until a lyric emerged. That lyric\, “Jenny was a warrior / Jenny was a thief / Jenny hit the corner clinic begging for relief\,” became “Jenny III\,” a song which laid down a challenge he’d never taken up before: writing a sequel to one of his most beloved albums. \nThe Mountain Goats’ catalog is thick with recurring characters—Jenny\, who originally appears in the All Hail West Texas track bearing her name\, as well as in “Straight Six” from Jam Eater Blues and Transcendental Youth side two jam “Night Light\,” is one of these\, someone who enters a song unexpectedly\, pricking up the ears of fans who are keen on continuing the various narrative threads running through the Mountain Goats’ discography before vanishing into the mist. In these songs\, Jenny is largely defined by her absence\, and she is given that definition by other characters. She is running from something. These features are beguiling\, both to the characters who’ve told her story so far and to the listener. They invite certain questions: Who is Jenny\, really? What is she running from? Well\, she’s a\nwarrior and a thief\, and\, this being an album by the Mountain Goats\, it’s a safe bet whatever she’s fleeing is something bad. Something catastrophically bad. \nJenny from Thebes is the story of Jenny\, her southwestern ranch style house\, the people for whom that house is a place of safety\, and the west Texas town that is uncomfortable with its existence. It is a story about the individual and society\, about safety and shelter and those who choose to provide care when nobody else will. \nThis is what a follow-up to All Hail West Texas entails. But if you think about the Mountain Goats as they were in 2001\, when Darnielle wrote and recorded that album on his own\, mostly into his Panasonic RX-FT500 boombox\, and how they are now as the recording and touring outfit of Darnielle\, Peter Hughes\, Matt Douglas\, and Jon Wurster\, you may find yourself asking how. That occurred to Darnielle\, too. \n“If we’re going to do a sequel to a record that was recorded almost entirely on a boombox\,” he asks\, “why not do the opposite and make it as big as possible?”\nDecamping to Tulsa\, Oklahoma’s legendary The Church Studio with Grammy-winning producer/engineer Trina Shoemaker (Sheryl Crow’s The Globe Sessions)\, that is exactly what the Mountain Goats did. Jenny from Thebes is a lush collection of showtunes\, pushing Darnielle as a vocalist and the Mountain Goats as a band\, broadening their sonic palette once again by leaning into influences like Godspell\, Jim Steinman\, and The Cars. The resulting album cuts a path that is simultaneously full of allusions longtime Mountain Goats fans will spin entire mythologies from while also being their most inviting record for those who’ve yet to be converted to the cause. \nLifted by Matt Douglas’ horn and string arrangements\, the dreamy guitar of Bully leader (and Bleed Out producer) Alicia Bognanno\, and backing vocals from Kathy Valentine of The Go-Go’s (“Only One Way\,” “Same as Cash\,” “Going to Dallas”) and Matt Nathanson (“Fresh Tattoo”)\, Jenny from Thebes is a widescreen musical in scope\, a melodrama of richly detailed characters and sweeping emotions. The west Texas the Mountain Goats conjure for Jenny is huge and already crumbling to the ground when we meet her in lead single “Clean Slate\,” where a new arrival to the safehouse finds it nearly full\, his host beyond exhaustion. Her burdens are heavy\, and the measures they cause her to take have consequences that scale well beyond anything she could have anticipated when she decided to open her home to others. Such gestures are noble and doomed. \n“You can’t be the person everyone relies on to take care of them and keep them safe for too long\,” Darnielle says of the reality of these spaces. “It eventually causes so much stress that it threatens to break you.” \nIronically\, that same stress makes it impossible for Jenny to see that she’s on the verge of being broken until it’s too late. Explaining the title of the album\, Darnielle notes that Jenny is not unlike a character from Greek literature\, someone on the verge of an unimaginable tragedy whose signs and portents will not make themselves known to her until she finds herself amidst the wreckage. “These things never happen in isolation\,” he says. “One bad event leads to and is the reason for another bad event. Jenny should know that you can’t keep a safehouse in a west Texas town\, but she’s too wrapped up in the process and has to go through the loss to understand how it happened.” \nWhether or not she comes to understand how it happened\, the events of Jenny from Thebes set Jenny on the run. A woman and her custom yellow and black Kawasaki held in the memories of a vanishing few\, someone who held the gate for as long as she could\, as a warrior might\, before disappearing into the night like a thief.

SUMMARY:Molly Tuttle with support: Dirty Blanket Duo at Concerts at Point of the Bluff
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS\nOn her new album\, City of Gold\, Molly Tuttle\, joined by her band Golden Highway\, shares a batch of spellbinding stories that span time and place: wildly colorful fables populated by gold miners and fortune tellers\, true-to-life tales of love and loss and a fast-changing world\, and a reimagining of Alice in Wonderland set in the backwoods of Kentucky\, to name just a few. The follow-up to 2022’s Crooked Tree—a widely lauded LP that won the Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album\, with Tuttle earning a Best New Artist nomination—the Northern California-raised musician’s fourth full-length album brings those narratives to a resplendent form of bluegrass rooted in her virtuosic guitar playing. Like Crooked Tree\, whose accolades also include an International Folk Music Award for Album of the Year\, City of Gold\, is co-produced with bluegrass legend Jerry Douglas\, showcasing the extraordinary musicianship that made Tuttle the first woman ever named Guitar Player of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association. But this time around\, the Nashville-based singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist chose to record with her live band for the first time—a move that lends a potent new energy to her exquisitely crafted sound. “When I was a kid we took a field trip to Coloma\, California\, to learn about the gold rush\,” says Tuttle in revealing the inspiration behind City of Gold. “I’ll never forget the dusty hills and the grizzled old miner who showed us the gold nugget around his neck—just like gold fever\, music has always captivated me and driven me to great lengths to explore its depths.” Noting that City of Gold “celebrates the music of my heart\, the land where I grew up\, and the stories I heard along the way\,” Tuttle found her band essential to every aspect of the LP. “I made this record with Golden Highway after playing over 100 shows across the country last year\,” says Tuttle\, whose bandmates include Bronwyn Keith-Hynes (fiddle\, vocals)\, Dominick Leslie (mandolin)\, Kyle Tuttle (banjo\, vocals)\, and Shelby Means (bass\, vocals). “On this album we chart some new territory along with some old familiar ground; the songs span from Yosemite up to the Gold Country and out beyond the mountains. That visit to Coloma (site of California’s first gold strike) is where I first heard about El Dorado\, the city of gold. Playing music can take you to a place that is just as precious.City of Gold\, recorded at Sound Emporium in Nashville\, opens on the breakneck storytelling and dizzyingly intricate arrangements of “El Dorado\,” a track that took shape after Tuttle shared the story of her Coloma field trip with Old Crow Medicine Show’s Ketch Secor (her co-writer for each track on the album). “I was telling Ketch about the guide with the big gold nugget hanging from his necklace\, and the whole song came together from that first line: ‘I’m Gold Rush Kate from the Golden State/With a nugget around my neck\,” Tuttle recalls. While “El Dorado” abounds in larger-than-life characters\, the wistful but radiant “Yosemite” finds Dave Matthews joining Tuttle for an intimate duet documenting the dissolution of a relationship. “A couple yearsago my ex-partner and I drove across the country to visit my family\, then broke up in the car on the way back to Nashville\,” she explains. “It was fun to write a road-trip-from-hell kind of song\, and singing it with Dave Matthews was my absolute dream collaboration.” And on “Next Rodeo\,” Keith-Hynes’s luminous fiddle melodies intensify the longing within Tuttle’s weary yet poetic account of life on the road (“Well\, it’s 200 towns of one-night stands/Tearing up the road with a five-piece band/Some days are diamonds some days are rust/The towns of tomorrow are yesterday’s dust”).\n\nDemonstrating Tuttle’s musical range\, City of Gold encompasses everything from the sprawling roots-rock of “When My Race Is Run\,” a gorgeously moody piece she describes as “a love song about death\, and wanting someone to be the person there waiting for you when you cross over\,” to the spooky folk of “Stranger Things\,” a darkly charged reverie featuring Douglas’s masterful work on Dobro. Tuttle also showcases her beguiling vocals and lavishly detailed songwriting with such matters as marijuana legalization on “Down Home Dispensary\,” a gloriously fun track spiked with unforgettable lines like “Legalize the southland and roll us a number” and gentrification’s corrosive effect on the character of once-vibrant neighborhoods on the harmony-fueled and freewheeling “Where Did All the Wild Things Go.” Throughout City of Gold\, Tuttle and Golden Highway deliver the kind of high-energy and full-hearted songs primed for a joyously unified singing-along\, an element that partly inspired the title to the album. “To me the words ‘City of Gold’ represent the community that the band and I have built with the people we get to play music for\, and how it’s become like its own little world\,” says Tuttle. “I wanted the album to celebrate that sense of community\, because one of the things I love most about this music is how so much of the audience plays music as well. They inspire me to keep writing songs in the hopes that people will sing along and maybe play those songs with their friends—almost like we’re all a part of one great big family.”\nSupported by Dirty Blanket Duo.
